I agree with you, it's for oil, but not totally. I think some small fraction of going to war was:

1. "they tried to kill my dad"
2. They're criticizing poppy for not taking Saddam down

I think these two factors made Bush susceptible to the neocons arguments. Then there's Cheney wanting to shovel cash to Halliburton. I think we just bought a long-term hellhole. Watch it turn into Lebanon.

I believe that Bush thought it was in the longterm strategic interests except for:

1. Not for the US but for his cronies in the oil biz
2. Bush can't think longterm beyond a few months as is evident in the aftermath political begging we've been seeing

I'm not sure who has whom at this point in time. If it descends into civil war or becomes a conservative Islamic state (both of which are just as likely right now as Iraq becoming a liberal democratic state), it could just be another unstable state like Iran. A political nonstarter always on the edge of something.

I think all that Bush cares about right now is to get enough stability to suck out all the oil possible. I don't think he cares one whit about Iraqis or about Americans.

plus the oil crony crowd (in other words the Bush administration) wanted to weaken OPEC and the saudis stranglehold on the US.

OPEC is stronger than ever now.
