I think there is a real possibility of a severe recession or depression. IMHO this is why the liquidity has been kept at such epic levels.

Is that the reason or is the reason to get Bush re-elected, or both?

That is one basis for the recession call. If you are going to have a recession, get it done in the first two years not the last two. Either way the govt is going to have to reduce spending, business tax credits expire this year, and refinancing has all but dried up.

Inventories are rising but demand is not.
Consumer confidence is falling.
Perhaps the recession does not even wait till next year.
I think it will but who knows. A collapsing stock market will seal the mess.
