You're correct. Periodic unemployment is typical for seasonal farm workers and the other jobs which are available for those with a limited education. As a result the unemployment rate is normally higher for this group. They don't stay unemployed long because there's always a lawn that needs raking or burgers that need to be fried and the uneducated usually cannot afford to stay unemployed for long. The current recession, which isn't - but it is, is disproportionately affecting the educated and especially the well educated. As a result many nuclear physicists and MBA's require additional education at their local technical college so they can become nurses or elementary school teachers - careers where there is still employment opportunities. This training takes several years. Worse still many people with advanced degrees are still clinging to futile hopes of finding a job that will not require a 90% cut in salary home.pacbell.net As a result these factors the BLS reports the fact that long term unemployment has risen by 300% over the last three years for those with a college education or better.
