"De-colonization" has proven to be a mixed blessing.

If you look at former British colonies, they tend to have done better, as to some extent Britain keep her hand in.

French colonies and Spanish colonies haven't fared so well. Haiti is the most dramatic example, Cuba is another. When Cuba became free of Spain, there was a void that the U.S. stepped into to some extent, but not really enough to guarantee it would remain a free nation. So long as the U.S. was able to keep its hands on the tiller, the nation did very well compared to other caribbean nations.
