Some recent scientific investigations trace the mythology of the 'Great Flood' to the historical event of the Med bursting through (after Sea levels rose at the end of the last Ice Age) and flooding what was a much smaller fresh water lake... and creating the modern Black Sea. Early human inhabitants along the (then tropical) shores of the proto-Black Sea would have had to 'high tail it' for higher ground for some months... as the water constantly rose behind them... and as the greatest waterfall on Earth existed for about a year at the Bosphorous. Survivors might have made their way to Sumer... and told their tales of the 'World flooding' to early Babylonians --- thus giving rise to the Flood story in Gilgamesh, which appeared much later in the Old Testament.

I never understand why fundamentalist want to rationalize their faith. Faith isn't rational. If God can create the world, he certainly can cause enough water to flood it to appear and then disappear. And he can create a world that seems to us to be much older than it really is, complete with fossils of animals that never actually lived. (Just like he created Adam who appeared to be a grown man even though he was 1 second old.) Why make yourself look foolish by trying to discredit any science that contradicts the Bible? Just admit you believe in magic. If something doesn't make scientific sense then, "it was magic." We will agree to disagree. Steve Dietrich
