It's probably easier for the Americans if their income/standard of living stay the same while the rest of the third world catch up.

I don't think there will be a massive political upheaval, after all, life is about living with the essentials for most people. So as long as they can get to have their burgers from McDonalds, garments from Gap, furniture from Ikea, movies from Hollywood, tv from HBO etc. I think the sheep will continue to happily graze.

The worst possible situation is likely that the sheep won't be shredding any more good quality wool. But I guess the sheep don't really care.
