"gets you out where?...do you, like the men of Babylon, think you can build your way high enough to see God?"

If we start with Galileo, and work our way through the theory of the Big Bang and the Hubble Telescope, and continue with theories of the multi-verse, the universe is ever expanding in scope, at least in human thought. It is constantly greater than we imagined it. Though the universe remains constant, our understanding of the vast scope of it increases.

These advances in science are peeling a very thin layer off of the onion. But in the process, the onion grows ever larger.

So I would say that this realization of the vast scope of the universe does not further us in an attempt to build a ladder to God, but rather as knowledge increases, demonstrates the futility of trying to build such a ladder.
