Ted, I got sidetracked with the whole anti-Semitism thing. Anyway ...

What started this discussion is that you complained that I should not criticize Gibson.

Who said you shouldn't criticize Gibson? If your interpretation of the Gospels doesn't jive with Gibson's, who am I to tell you otherwise?

Ten, when I complained about Gibson, below is how you responded:

<font color=brown>"Ted, The reality is that Jesus's ministry was not about torture and death but about life and its potential goodness. How sick that Gibson dwells mostly on the former, not the latter. How disturbed that he accentuates the drama of Jesus's ending in a way that is horribly graphic.

Do you know anything about the significance of Jesus' death on the cross? Once you do, you too will agree that the movie is anything but anti-Semitic, and that the whole notion of Jews killing Jesus is bunk."<font color=black>

Maybe its like you said......you got sidetracked.

My response........why is it necessary to watch Jesus flayed so badly by a whip that the bodily fluids and skin are seen as they escape his body?

I have a feeling you don't understand the significance of Jesus' death on the cross.

It amazes me that we can both be speaking English and still things get completely mucked up.

I understand why Jesus died........and it didn't have to be on the cross. However, that was a common way to punish [and kill] criminals in that day. The only difference with Jesus was that they nailed him to the cross.

My criticism has to do with the fact that Gibson displays his dying in a grotesquely graphic way. I have seen two commercials for the film and its all I can do not to get sick to my stomach. I can't imagine what the entire film is like.

It seems to me that Gibson is either disturbed and/or overly dramatical and fanatical. Because of its controversy and the uniqueness of hearing Aramaic spoken, I was planning to see it. Now, I am not so sure. Like I said, I see no reason to show Jesus being whipped to the point that he becomes a bloody pulp. A bloody crown of thorns makes the point very well. Gibson was lucky to get someone from WA state to be his Jesus. No one esle would have put up with this sick obsession to grotesque.

But let me put it to you another way. Ask yourself why it was necessary for Steven Spielberg to show the gruesome imagery in Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

Trust me, the two commercials I saw make SPR and SL look like children's movies. I am serious........the images of a tortured Jesus in the film are beyond disturbing.
