Dycom rises 3% in late trading after earning $16.4M (DY) by Chris Bagley
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Dycom Industries (DY) rose 67 cents, or 3 percent, in after-hours trading after the company said it swung to a profit of $16.4 million, or 34 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter. The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based company, which provides construction services to U.S. phone companies, said it earned 20 cents a share, excluding a gain on the sale of accounts receivable. That compares with the 18 cents expected by two analysts in a Reuters Research survey. Dycom reported a loss of 2 cents a share a year earlier. Sales came in at $196.4 million. That compares to analysts' estimate of $185.1 million, and to the $137.2 million the company recorded a year ago.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Chip design software maker Synopsys (SNPS) warned after the market closed Monday that it sees pro forma earnings of 31 cents a share to 35 cents a share in its fiscal second quarter, shy of the mean Thomson First Call forecast of 39 cents a share. Its fiscal first-quarter profit was $32.2 million, or 19 cents a share, compared to a profit of $34.4 million, or 22 cents a share, in the year-ago period. On a pro forma basis, Synopsys earned $54.3 million, or 33 cents a share, in the latest period. Analysts polled by First Call were looking for a profit of 31 cents a share. Revenue rose to $285.3 million from $268.1 million, surpassing the First Call mean estimate of $282.5 million. Separately, Synopsys said it will acquire Monolithic System Technology Inc. (MOSY), a maker of high-density chips, for $432 million, and has purchased privately held Accelerant Networks for an undisclosed amount.
