Perhaps this might help: Our meaning flows from the values we attach to our inner and outer worlds. In the simplest vernacular--some things MATTER to us--be they objects or ideas. Inherent in the idea of value is the idea of "price". It is difficult to value that which has no cost and that which is assured.

Now the common conception of "God" is as a Supreme Being who (for some reason) will grant us eternal shield from decay--and thus prevent our ultimate extinction. We would thus be granted our own God-Hood as unconditioned beings.

As you know, mortal beings do NOT live forever. They are always at risk. Thus, life has value: because it is NOT assured, and because all actions and choices DO involve the risks of pain, suffering, and death.

I cannot envision any meaning in a life which would no longer involve the uncertainties and the risks that make life matter to me. Let others hum for a trillion years, and then for a trillion years again. I wish only for the sun and the wind, and the rain. Let the Priest pass by my goat, my corn, and my barley. I do not need his protection nor his intervention. It is he who needs me.
