Ted, to me, it's all about Jesus suffering and identifying with our pain and humiliation. But I think a pastor would be able to explain it better than I could from here.

I am not sure why you place such emphasis on the cross. I think the significant part was his dying...not where or how he died.

Gruesomeness is part of the package. The more gruesome, the more guilt, the more captive, the more fear, etc...hence the feeling that a person nearer to the day of his/her death should feel more inhibited (hence Rooney) than a younger one, since the day of judgement is near...but then again, sin all you want, go to confession, it's all better, repeat all over again. It's idiotic and clever at the same time.
