with its predisposition to faith-based initiatives you can be sure the White House is doing a lot of praying these days for better consumer confidence as well as more favorable corporate hiring plans...

Of course there are always diversions such as making war on gay marriages as well as war on Saddam Hussein with open-ended budgets that aren't included in the budget handed up to Capitol Hill.

Which shell has the pea under it? Better yet, keep your eye on the ball.

m1, one nice guage would be the 30% yr/yr revenue gains for trucking companies. companies are clearly moving durable and non-durable goods. the production has slowed the job recovery, but at 5.6% unemployment, it's not as bad as some are making it out to be....it used to be that 4% was considered "full employment". of course, the overheated economy in the late 90's provided for an overheated labor market, as well. you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a $250k a year software or telecom equipment salesman. we all know how those markets have fared over the last few years....ask those who worked at WCOM, selling telephone services, if they are able to find equal-paying jobs. i could obviously, provide a long list of similar companies in many industries that were part of a huge bubble....
