Three quick thoughts on that issue: 1) Marriage was not institutionalized as a child-rearing function only. 2) Gay folks are able to adopt children, and given there are so many children who are not being adopted and who are being raised in cold, gray steel-like environments this is positive. Protections of marriage would assist here. 3) Americans got past interracial marriages, they got past poligimy laws, they got past women in the workplace issues, certainly Americans can get past gay marriages and they don't need GOPwingers or political opportunism to block them from doing this.
