Thanks Dave. I didn't realize that System Restore didn't affect user data. I may just try that since this has only been happening for a couple of weeks.

Belated thanks for the advice on XP shutdown problems.....

I found that my System Restore was not enabled (I wonder if it shipped that way or I absent-mindedly disabled it at some point?) so I could not go back and restore it to an earlier stage in order to get around the problem. So I went to the link provided by shadowman (thanks shadowman!):

The link talked mainly about XP automatically rebooting or hanging when shutting down, as opposed to just hibernating for no apparent reason and not waking up even to CTL-ALT-DEL. Nevertheless, I tried several of the solutions they suggested, such as updating Roxio drivers and fiddling with some of the deeply buried system settings. As of now, the PC is not self-hibernating. The PC also seems to be executing most of its tasks much more quickly than it was for some reason.
