It's fascinating to watch the American corporatist culture struggle to respond to Mad Cow and Bird Flu. The "powers that be" are used to making some cosmetic alterations, gearing up their media machine and leading a docile American public. But this time it's foreign governments - you know, those same guys we were insulting a year ago. And they're just not going for the shell game. The US proposes to increase the Mad Cow inspections from 20K to 40K, and that be for downer cattle. Japan says we're having problems, and we inspect all (that's right ALL) of our slaughtered cattle. Europe says we're having problems, and the cattle that are infected are not downers. And guess what? Neither was the Mad Cow found here. Meanwhile the US wants the bans on beef and poultry lifted. Good luck.

What's sad is the safety of our food supply depends on the intransigence of foreign governments.
