Andrew Sullivan flips into full meltdown mode

Not surprising if you've been following him. Sullivan has so utterly convinced himself that marriage IS the lifelong commitment of any two people, which the government unfairly does not permit to same-sex couples, that he can no longer see that there is still a definitional issue under discussion for most people, who still think that marriage IS the lifelong commitment of a man and a woman.

Same-sex marriage is a novel idea. I cannot think of one culture, present or past, even those that tolerate and even honor homosexual relations, using marriage on them. Marriage was for arranging property, children, inheritance. The homosexual relationship used different ceremonies, and was usually expected to co-exist with marriage.

Wonder what Sullivan will say when the polygamists decide they want to break the law like the SF mayor did, and they decree they can legally have as many wives as they want???

We must appeal to the fair-minded center of the country that balks at the hatred and fear that much of the religious right feeds on.

He will have to go pretty far left to find a "fair-minded center" when even 35% of registered Democrats strongly oppose gay marriage.
