Hadn't thought of that, though it's obvious that some people go there (9/11 famously). I was thinking of Becker's work, Denial of Death. His thesis is about repression and even lying in the face of our mortality and decay, in order to be able to function. Basically he says we pretend a number of things about ourselves and attempt to deny the reality of the terror of our situation. I was talking more about the real terror of the consequence of our death, in Becker's terms. I watched a program on head hunters the other night. They also were attempting to mitigate their ultimate ends through capturing an enemy's head. It's a story (fabrication) that has meaning for them, enabling to perform more powerfully in the face of death.
