You wouldn't want to go to the other side of that island now. I had a friend who went to Haiti a few years ago on a Church trip to do some construction. The people use rocks to wipe themselves after a bowel movement. When they'd get sick they'd take rocks to the hospital and flush them down the toilet which caused a clog which caused the raw sewage from the hospital to flow into the lake that was the drinking supply. He could have fixed it for them but there wasn't one track hoe in the whole country for him to use to dig it out.
