new yorker had same opinion of movie Deb Novell interview last night or the night before.

The only interest I have is to see how the media plays it, and what kind of gross it does. If the media plays the anti-semitic card, it will make the Evangelicals madder at them than they are. The violence complaint is just a legitimate criticism.

FYI,
The line about the jews and their children being cursed was not removed from the movie--just the subtitle was changed and apparently just in the US or English language version. See Page 14 of NYTimes today for the views of various christians on this movie. Several were actually disappointed and the anti-semitism was just a small part of what some did not like.
Frankly my gut reaction about Mel, i think will hold up. He has produced a sanitised version of anti-semitism much like david duke tried to do re: african americans. He was brought up in that old catholic, pre-John 23 mode with a racist father. He can repudiate his dad in extremis but that puts him at odds with the vatican. I am waiting to hear more from the Vatican. Last i heard, weeks ago, was that they liked the movie. So the confusion still remains.

PS John 23. Although he served for a very short time, he was the great one imo. The current Pope views Jews as brothers. Mel Gibson does not although some of his best friends are jewish. <g>
