I agree that many do not "expect SS" when they retire. The rub will be that they will need that income as I don't believe they will have savings and investments to replace SS. So there's lip service to the inevitable, which will make it easy for the gov't to steal the benefits outright (in the form of a cancellation of the IOU's mainly); yet at the same time I don't see anything resembling the kind of savings and investments required of the masses to compensate for the eventual needs of retirement with or without SS.
