a reasonable theory actually. the pressure will be on Rove now to ditch him: those SS comments cost some votes

Actually it's remarkable that he took on two sacred cows in two days: the GSEs and Social Security. Isn't he up for reappointment in April? Maybe he's out and knows it, and is just taking a final shot at some real issues, to give Bush the excuse not to reappoint him?

Personally I think he wants out.
In his mind he defeated the K-Winter.
Why not go out on top.
Whatever happens after this he will blame his successor, deficit spending, congress, and his aunt Martha if need be.

Look out for his replacement.
The odds on favorite is Dollar Ben "helicopter drop" Benanke. Dollar Ben is thie only guy easier than easy al.
