Maybe Grover Norquist "swings," as well.

Note that he accompanied the "crew" on the "donor-financed" holiday.

Perrys spend night at the White House

By Maria Recio

Star-Telegram Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Gov. Rick Perry made a whirlwind trip to Washington on Sunday and Monday, attending
several events during the National Governors Association's winter meeting and staying Sunday night at the
White House.

Perry and his wife, Anita, attended the White House state dinner that President Bush held for the governors
Sunday and enjoyed Bush's hospitality in the residence. Perry's friendship with Bush dates to 1998, when
Bush was re-elected Texas governor and Perry was elected lieutenant governor. Perry succeeded Bush
when Bush was elected president in 2000, and Perry was elected in 2002.

The Texas governor did not meet with reporters during the trip.

Perry withdrew from the NGA last year, primarily for budgetary reasons. Spokeswoman Kathy Walt said that
Perry was in Washington to attend Republican Governors Association meetings. All governors were invited
to the state dinner, and Perry attended an RGA fund-raiser Monday night at the D.C. Convention Center,
where the president spoke.

Perry, who did not attend the meeting last year, was one of only three state governors not to register for
this year's meeting. "He's not a member of NGA," Walt said. "It's primarily for cost-cutting reasons, but in
the past he did have concerns about the direction of the organization."

NGA spokeswoman Christine LaPaille said that "all governors are considered members, even if they haven't
paid dues." Texas' dues, which were not paid this year, are $162,900 annually.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said he spoke with Perry and urged him to re-join NGA. "I'm making it a top
priority," said Huckabee, who will be the organization's chairman in 2005. "We need his perspective."

Walt said Perry "may reconsider."

"He'll look at NGA policies, and if NGA is going in the direction Perry agrees with of limited government, then
we'll reconsider our membership again," she said.
