TOKYO - Officials from Japan's fair trade watchdog raided the Japanese unit of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, the Tokyo-based company said.

The Fair Trade Commission inspected the headquarters office of Microsoft Japan, a spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity.

Japan's Kyodo News reported that Microsoft Japan is suspected of violating anti-monopoly laws by attaching improper restrictive conditions when signing software deals with Japanese personal computer manufacturers.

The spokeswoman said the company is looking into the reasons for the raid and had no immediate comment on the report.

Microsoft's Windows software dominates computers sold and made in Japan, as in other parts of the world.
