That Bush is willing to risk losing the votes of gay Republicans (and I believe there are many) suggests to me that he's in trouble with the far right and thinks he needs to "throw them a bone."

Bush is in favor of civil unions. Kerry is for civil unions. Neither candidate is in favor of gay marriage.

Mant people will see Bush's call for a constitutional change as pandering and purely political.

Bush loses in every category.

Kerry leads Bush now 56 to 44. Bush is heading for a loss.

I am one of those 65% who opposes gay marriage. That does not neccassarily translate to a vote to Bush. Right now this election is refrendum on last 4 years of Bush admin and it is his to lose. I predict he will due to bread and butter issues.
Morality takes a second place to Bread, Clothes and Roof under which one lives. If the potential risk to any of those 3 (Bread, Clothes and Housing affordabitiy) a voter will ditch morality and vote against Bush.
