Unfortunately, by the time it is a last resort, we're talking about potentially retroactively negating tens of thousands of gay marriages.

I think that those getting "married" in San Francisco understand that their status may not be permanent. They would not be shocked if their status reverted and would be no worse off than they are now. I agree with you that it's better not to have to undo what's been done, but the impact of that hardly warrants a Constitutional amendment.

In any event, the amendment would take years to put in place so it's not timely enough to be relevant as a preventative.
