It's a matter of emphasis. Catholics tend to emphasize the agony of Christ's sacrifice. Protestants tend to emphasize the resurrection. In Catholic churches you will usually see statues of Christ on the cross. In most protestant churches you will see an empty cross.

I guess the christians have not yet settled on the story or the importance of the brutality of his death in all this.

Spartacus? 6,000 of HIS followers were executed by crucifixion along the Appian Way leading into Rome.

The only reason Spartacus can't be included in the bunch is that his fate is unknown. It is believed he was killed in the last battle.

Extra punishment, my ***. Crucifixion was a standard Roman execution technique for serious (and often not-so-serious- -remember the thief next to Jesus?) criminals.
