I'm not certain, but I think the scourging was exceptionally brutal. And the crown of thorns was definitely unique treatment...

Actually, He suffered less than the usual victim. Pilot was surprised when told He was dead because it happened so soon. Usually they let the victim suffer for many hours, and then broke their legs. They couldn't stand anymore, so they slumped and suffocated. Jesus did not endure the breaking of his legs (very significant because that fulfilled an Old Testament prophecy).
