Not familiar with the period you write about, but the way I see it, is, that we as a civilization are failing to our own technological advances.

First birth rate did not adjust to life expectancy and low child / birth mortality .... the world is running out of resources as there are to many people to feed.

Even now no one cares about worldwide population growth. In a way Mao was right imposing draconian laws in China (for sure there are more civilised ways to achive the same) unfortunate no one paid attention and did not promote low fertility rate were it is needed most.

The end result will be misery for all and social unrest every were.

If fertility rate would have been low in SE Asia ME Africa and Indian Sub Continent we would had lower energy prices and a higher standard of living. Why no one is taking urgent steps in this direction is beyond me
