correct me if I am wrong, but the Supreme court deals with issues of constitutionality and the only way to get in front of the supreme court is to challenge the current laws. The process has to start somewhere and it will be many years before it reaches the supreme court.

If this is an issue of constitutionality (which I believe it is) then it is the supreme court that will determine the outcome, not general consensus. And if the supreme court finds in favor of gay marriage, then there will be no constitutional amendment.
