I am unclear why the death of JC has to be depicted with extreme brutality.

It's the punishment we all deserve for our sins. It's tough to swallow, especially for those who don't understand or accept Jesus' blood sacrifice for sins, but it's important to say the least.

Aaaah, I never understood that that was the interpretation. That's not mine btw. I think the way JC was crucified was more a reminder of the sad state of the human paradigm rather than what he or we deserve. Hence, his words..."Forgive them, Father, they know not what they do." indicates to me at least that he was apologizing for the weakness of humanity.

To me, its bespeaks of human high drama when the real drama was JC's message to humanity.

Throughout the four Gospels, Jesus spoke repeatedly about his upcoming death on the cross and how he needed to go in order to save mankind from sins. There's no way to separate the cross from the rest of Jesus' message to humanity, because it's the center of it all.

Fair enough.
