It's the rational belief that government is corrupt. There are endless stories of government waste and pork from airports no one uses to roads no one drives on. There's always a fleecing of America story somewhere and they're not just for a few tens of thousands (a la KBR's gym towels and 7500/month car leases) but for billions.

The only reason human beings are where we are is because of organized effort. I agree that most people get hung up on the concept of individual effort leading to success that they can't grasp how we are nothing without each other (now that's a scary thought!).

However, government expenditures can also compete with private efforts AND frequently the math simply doesn't add up. In this case, Bush took a record surplus and made it into a record deficit in 3 short years. He reduced government revenues AND massively increased expenditures (by 25% in just 3 years!).

Someone, somewhere has to pay for this and now it's going to be the SS system?

We are spending $160 billion for oil instead of $160 billion for alternative energy. We are spending $300b for tax cuts instead of $300b for SS.
