Gore blew it. Remember the debates? Bush answered questions simply and effectively - "Everybody pays taxes. Everybody gets a tax cut." Whereas Gore's answers were often more accurate but convoluted to the point where most people forgot the question. It almost seemed he was speaking just to use up every second of his allotted time.

What terrifies me this year is that the Democratic candidates will repeat these errors. Yesterday in a California news conference John Edwards refused to make his position on gay marriage clear... a pathetic attempt to deflect a question he didn't want to answer. John Kerry does that a lot... simple questions ellicit long, sometimes muddy replies.

Clark and Dean were the only candidates who could distill the essence of an issue into something useful for a sound bite - which, sadly, is the state of American thought today. I especially recall Clark's remark to a question regarding Bush's wearing a flight suit... "Many brave airmen died wearing that uniform. It's wrong to use it for political purposes."

There. Said. Done.

Kerry needs to refine is message in similar terms.

Yes, the whole MidEast vibe would have been different had the popular will of Americans been able to keep its nod toward Gore...
