bigotry

\Big"ot*ry\, n. [Cf. F. bigoterie.] 1. The state of mind of a bigot; obstinate and unreasoning attachment of one's own belief and opinions, with narrow-minded intolerance of beliefs opposed to them.

How that got to be the greatest of sins I'll never understand.

Note how it is not even possible to define the term without making value judgments concerning the accused party. He is being "obstinate" "unreasoning" and "narrow-minded."

So to understand the meaning of the term, we must first determine under what conditions a person with an opposing view can be fairly said to be obstinate, unreasoning and narrow-minded.

This is, of course, impossible, which means that the charge of being a "bigot" is totally meaningless, it can be levelled by anyone at anytime against anyone with an opposing opinion.
