[SS] is one heck of a benefit most do not think of when employed. Unless of course that all this money is thrown away because our government spent it instead of protected it. The basic lack of investment of these funds has hurt us tremendously over the decades. Washington has done a terrible job and this is not an issue where we should allow the two parties to play each other off, instead we should point our fingers at both of them, but that will not happen.

Someone told me once that "Social Security" is a euphemism for "Taxes & Welfare", but a lot of people still think there's an account somewhere with money in it and their name on it. If everyone could & would provide for their own retirement/disability/survivors, there'd be no need for SS. In order to have benefits for those who don't have enough of a pension or retirement account, others have to be taxed to pay for it. Don't expect a return from that sort of "investment".
