"My dad taught me my faith and I believe what he taught me. The man never lied to me in his life." -- Mel Gibson, Reader's Digest interview.

Hi E,
Most folks get their religous beliefs from their parents and not from churches, movies etc. My dad was irreligious but still proud of his jewish heritage. Me too and i have a son who pretty much views things the same way. We all did our stint in religous school, were bar mitzvahed etc. But in our heart of hearts, we develop a philosophy of life that comes from interaction within the family.
That being said, if my dad showed a racist streak, I would call him on it. And i wouldnt produce a movie showing slaves happy on the plantation even if it was based on a great book and my dad said it were so. The gospels say what they say but they were written years after the events and by men, not without justified prejudice against some jews plus a religous mission to spread christianity. So why not at least recognize the possibility that their version of events was an overstatement. Hell we get 10 books with 10 different opinions on every event that happens, so why could there not be at least a slightly different truth. mike

To the first statement, as I have already stated, the film accurately reflects what the Gospels themselves say. There are some minor added elements but none are significant.

To the second statement, I don't have any independent knowledge of the veracity or lack thereof. I just don't know.

However, according to Christians, having the blood of Christ on you isn't a bad thing, it's a good thing. It washes away sin. We drink the blood of Christ, remember? And eat his body. Catholics do, anyway.

To the third statement, I think it's a shame that Gibson's father, a whacky 85 year old man who is not well educated, and appears to be somewhat senile, is being made into an issue. I am not going to be drawn into that any further. I don't agree with him, I don't approve of him, but he's Hutton Gibson, not Mel, and I see no reason to tar Mel Gibson with his father's ideas.

Is denying that the Holocaust happened a "lie" or an "opinion"? I think it's an "opinion." If Hutton Gibson knew that the Holocaust happened through personal experience, it would be a "lie."

I know people think that Elvis is alive and aliens conduct experiments on earthlings, but they aren't liars, they're just whacko.
