WSJ has two stories on options today. Lead on Page 1 about big issuances about 9/21/2001, the Friday of the week the markets reopened after 9|11.

And on the continuation page A4, a story "Broadcom Faces at Least $750 Million Charge to Correct Options Errors".

...

Erik Lie, the U of Iowa professor whose work helped fuel regulatory inquiries into backdating, ... in new research ... estimates that 29% of the nearly 8,000 firms studied had backdated or otherwise manipulated grants to top executives at some point between 1996 and 2005.

"This scandal is much bigger than what we currently are seeing in the media ..."

Broadcom said the charges were noncash and "no issues have been identified that affect equity awards to" Nicholas III and Samueli or to Scott McGregor.
