The Gospels being written in part for the purpose of exculpating the Romans, insofar as its creators could get away with that, it cuts no ice to say the representation of Pilate to be found there achieves that purpose. However, the representation-- as described-- of Pilate in the movie goes beyond what might reasonably be inferred from the Gospels. Or so others have found it.

I have always liked Mikhail Bulkakov's rendition of the story in The Master and Margarita.

There have been many renditions of 'the story.'I hope that not too many people will forget that the Gibson movie, like Bulgakov's fiction, is just one more of these 'stories.'
