The book looks very good, thanks for the recommendation. I knew there were several competing sects and texts, and many texts were rejected. But it still doesn't answer why, especially when they had 300 years to do it in, didn't the proto-orthodox sect make sure the stories all jibed? In one of Ehrman's other books he says that 'modifications' and 'clarifications' have been inserted to avoid potential misreading, so it appears they were tweaking things anyway.

That they knowingly kept in inconsistencies make the Gospels more credible, in my opinion. If they were in perfect agreement I'd be suspicious. You know the old story about four people witnessing a car accident - you get four different versions of events.
