Amy, Do not confuse this particular Republican author's blanket statement made against liberals, with the opinions of Jewish people. First of all, you don't even know this guy is a Republican. For all we know, he could be a moderate Democrat not unlike Joe Lieberman. I doubt it........his attack on "university lefties" and "secular Europeans" hardly was done in moderation. Second, I'm pretty sure Jewish people can come up with their own individual opinions. So far, the few Jews I know personally would see it this "Republican's" way. Maybe you're the one making sweeping generalizations. And then maybe its them or the crowd you keep. I find there is a growing tendency for conservative Jews to attack those people who are critical of Israel and its treatment of Palestine, and dress up their Israeli criticism as anti Semitism. Many secular Europeans ARE critical of Israel as am I. Yet, I know I am not anti Semitic.......and I doubt they are. What we are is critical of Israeli's current policies. Many ex patriate Israelis also are critical. Are they anti Semitic as well? guardian.co.uk Interestingly, the Europeans who are openly critical of Jews and not Israel tend to be right wing.......and certainly, the perpetrators of anti Semitic violence in Europe are usually skin heads who politically are considered right. You think it's okay to be biased against leftists? Did it ever occur to you to look at Arnold as a role model on one item: he is Republican, yet appears to have the ability to respect Democrats and (so far) not make blanket statements against Democrats. I suppose when Hillary mentioned the "vast right-wing conspiracy," you were equally as indignant. Or when high-minded intellectuals psychologically characterize conservatives as suffering from "fear and aggression" and associate Ronald Reagan and Rush Limbaugh with Hitler and Mussolini: berkeley.edu; I find conservatism as practiced in America to fit the definition developed by the college professors in that link. One of my German friends, you, maybe Arnold, John Fowler......practice a different type of conservatism that I don't think is typical of the current "American conservative". Purely anecdotal but that's my take on the situation. ted

So if a reaction seems unfairly stronger to you than what it was with politicians, it's because the reaction matches this higher expectation. Indirectly, it's a compliment. I may obviously be wrong, but your posts (over the years) were giving me the impression you think all Jews think one way - your Republican way. Which is why you'll see me repeatedly point out the perspective of Jewish people in Israel and USA that do not think your way. It's important to realize that there are a substantial number of liberal Jews (in fact, most Israelis in hightech appear to be liberal, which doesn't make being liberal more right or more wrong). But it's very important to realize there indeed are liberal Jews and quite a large number of them too. It's incorrect to think all Jews are conservative. It's disingenuous to hide a Republican point of view behind another person's ethnic cloak, as it appeared this writer was doing when he made a sweeping statement against liberals. For example, if a Republican sweepingly attacks liberals, this could be because the person is pushing forward their particular Republican viewpoint but in a way that generalizes, and not because of their ethnicity. On another point, let's be clear what we're discussing. The entire article is beautiful and extremely well-written, with excellent valid points. Am nodding in agreement as I read the article, until the very end where the writer unfortunately makes a sweeping statement against liberal people. RE: "Maybe you're the one making sweeping generalizations." I'm making the point that all Jewish people do not think like you do. Some are conservative and some are liberals. It's incorrect to lump them all into one conservative bucket, which is the impression I was getting, whether wrong or right. (Agreed, it's also incorrect to lump them into one liberal bucket too.) Now, let's get back to the real issue here. Why do you think it's okay to be biased against liberals? Remember, I have higher expectations from you, than a politician, though I think Arnold exemplifies how a person can be respectful of other politicial persuasions - he seemingly avoids making blanket statements. Maybe the rules are different on the AMD chat thread, and making sweeping statements are AOK here. If so, then those are the rules. It's just a bit shocking to see you engage in it - that's where I struggle. On an unrelated note, egads, some Israeli folks have repeatedly seen separately some of the ultra conservative Rabbi's pick up a prostitute at a hotel parking lot that's just "down the hill" from hightech, and take them into a hotel room for about an hour. I asked how did they know the Rabbi wasn't helping them? They said, the one hour repeated visit was one clue and the payment in the parking lot was another clue, and the gossip was yet another clue. I guess it's a step up from abusing small children. When I asked why the Israeli police don't put an end to it, they said the police were being bribed to look the other way. Didn't think Israeli would have overt bribery problems. Regards, Amy J
