Does it give you the creeps because of what the author says about Nascar? Because what he says seems to be true, even though NASCAR is apparently trying very hard to create diversity, at this point they have not succeeded yet:

Obviously if you market something to an all white sport in this day and age of accurate demographics you know exactly what you are doing and who you are marketing to...

How likely is Bush to get the black vote, after all? Not very likely. So logically he is playing to his base, just as he is playing to the religious right with his support of the vitally important <bg> amendment supporting straight marriage.

LOL. Where have you been? I'm not actively following the campaigns but even I know that Nascar Men are this year's Soccer Moms. The former is not about Nascar any more than the latter is about soccer. And this NYT reporter sure didn't come up with the label.
