Think back to Clinton's strategy for election win. He slipped into Republican's long-time fiscal conservative mode. It worked. In order to win majority of votes, a candidate must win a certain % of moderates--swing voters. Edwards is more appealing to the Centrists. The long-time Dems will vote for their candidate no matter what his stance. It's those who study the issues & vote for the person not the party that determine the winner. It's the same for local elections.
