Kenneth - do you think it will ever be possible to have an honest and open discussion of SS in the US? A discussion to define its purpose? A discussion to define its funding.

Ah - on a Kerry or Edwards thread SS is a weapon. Who cares about the future - it is only the weapon of the moment. Besides - it plays well with the aged and uneducated. Yup scare the oldies - it gets votes - shame on y'all!

SS generates a large surplus. The surplus is being used to reduce the deficit.

It would be more correct to say that the SS surplus is being used to finance or offset the federal deficit. But if you're already lumping SS in with the rest of the federal government, then you must see it as just another federal benefits program which ought to be paid by the progressive income tax rather than the regressive payroll tax.
