Kerry did help end the war. He had a big influence on Nixon. If you read the Watergate tapes transcripts you see Nixon was spooked by Kerry ("looks and sounds like JFK, Kennedy hair") and feared him deeply. Remember JFK beat Nixon badly in 1960.

Ehrlichman caled Kerry a "baby killer" and Nixon said "destroy this new JFK". Indeed they tried to destroy Kerry but failed.

Kerry left the Vets against the war soon after he started with them and went into politics. He was never a radical. Never had anything to do with upside down flags. Never did anything with Jane Fonda. Never advocated anything but working within the system to change things and end the war.

Why did he want to end the war? Only one reason, to save his brothers in arms' lives. Two of his best friends were killed in Nam and it stunned him deeply. Also remember Kery was forced to do things like kill a young VC with his bare hands to save his boat crew. A guy who'd been at Yale the year before with GW. It was an ugly war and he knew it firsthand. he and his brothers earned the right to protest it. No one can take that right away or criticize it.
