Steven has done a rundown on these various Muslim Groups in the Phillippines, and the tendency seems to be to lable them all "Al Qaeda" types. Most of them seem to be local gangs that Manila should handle.

Steven and I do not totally agree.

The ties between Abu Sayyaf and aq are well documented.
Here are two examples:
Khalifa, the Saudi who helped fund Abu Sayyaf, is also Osama bin Laden’s brother-in-law.
Aby Sayyaf bombed a Philippine jetliner in the mid 1990s. This was a test run for Ramzi Yousef's plan to bomb 11 American jetliners simultaneously. Yousef was the leader of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Yousef was also tied to aq and Khalifa.

Steven is right there is a long tradition of bandits operating in the Philippine Islands. But bandits don't blow up 11 airliners and the WTC ... Muslim extremist terrorists do.
