Lizzie, here is an interesting article on the impact of outsourcing. It is from an Indian newspaper. It rightly points out that the benefits of outsourcing are realized only when there is a "job churning". When you loose 3 million jobs and outsource them to markets where it is competitive you also create 3 million new ones in cutting edge sectors. YOu do so via job retraining programs, close coupling with the industry and the educational institutions etc. Clinton did that very well and pushed the US into economic prosperity. Maintained US edge in the world. Bush on the other hand has failed to not only create new jobs but has failed to even identify the sectors that he needs to create new jobs in. This is understandable coming from a former oil man surrounded by people from the aluminum and rail road industries. But I don't think it is desireable in a Presidency. Anyway, here is the link enjoy.

here is another from the same source:
The US lost 2.9 million jobs in the 2001 recession, and job recovery has been slow. So, in an election year, political rhetoric on outsourcing is understandable.

But even if some protectionist barriers come up, they will barely dent outsourcing: the gains are too huge to be ignored.
American companies that do not outsource will be bankrupted by global rivals that do, and bankrupt companies do not employ people.

That's very bad news for Bush. He needs white collar workers to support him. If Kerry wins that sector it's all over for Bush. Bad enough Kerry might win the vets vote. As of right ow I'd say Bush looks like toast, but a lot can happen between now and November.
