When you hear duck, don't stick your head up and look for one.

They weren't hit with buckshot, it was with spent birdshot. That happens a lot. A bird gets shot at and the spent shot, spent meaning it's lost it's go, comes raining down. It would really hurt if you got it in the eye so most duck hunters wear safety glasses or a cap with a bill.

Now buckshot is entirely a different thing. .38 caliber moving faster than a .22 rifle bullet.
