<But obviously you believe that the side that resorts to terrorism and targeting civilians deliberately should be the ones who govern in Iraq.>

I believe that out of roughly 5,000 attacks "since the end of major hostilities", the vast majority are being committed by Iraqis. As for who will "win", you leave out the most obvious possibility -- nobody. Certainly the call to terrorism has grown far larger in Iraq now that we are there. And certainly the potential for religious extremism has grown. As for anything we might actually accomplish, it is anybody's guess but there are few signs of any of the things you propose. The western-leaning, stable democracy you foresee is as real as the WMDs that the White House claimed they new for a fact were in Iraq. It is impossible to know the future, but for the present there is blood, and more blood. The vast majority of the people dying are on the American side. The social changes are not in the direction of secular democratic freedom but are instead signalling the creation of yet another repressive theocracy. This war was a judgement call -- a bad juddgement call. People who point out the depth of the bad judgement are on the side of the enemy as you would have it. But for Americans, the truth about Iraq is that bad judgement got us into this and only good judgement will get us out of it. Lying about what happened and why, and then lying about what is going on now and what is likely in the future is not good judegement and it is certainly not patriotic -- it is just stupid and destructive of American lives, American values and American intersts.
