I look at the LOTR as a history of a little people trying to live their lives the way they see fit against a backdrop of a bureaucratic world gone mad. The agent of the madness "the ring" tempts even those who seek to destroy it.

You might not believe there was a historical figure called Jesus but the Roman tyrants who watched their world crumble probably did. That epoch crumbled to such a degree they decided to retool and become part of the story instead of getting written out of the script.
