I think it is very important that students at elite universities see the writing on the wall. Soon the defense department and security agencies will trumpet the risk to national security. When I was a kid, the famous saying was, "What is good for General Motors is good for the country." We have come full circle. There is a strong conflict of interest between the bottom lines of global corporations and the economic and security interests of the people of the US. The US has not been involved in much of a debate between capitalism and socialism. We have some social welfare that grew out of the depth of despair of the Great Depression, but we have forces working to dismantle the social welfare programs. Now, capitalism threatens to reduce most of the labor force to low wage, benefitless jobs and to remove most incentives for science and engineeering educations. The words nationalism and socialism come to mind, but previous experiments with these in other countries have been both disasters and tragedies.
