Israeli officials meet Rice, Powell on compensation for disengagement plan

By Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondent

Israeli officials met Monday with National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State Colin Powell and other officials to discuss Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "disengagement plan," and what Israel will get in exchange from the United States for the evacuation of settlements in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

The Israeli team - led by the prime minister's bureau chief Dov Weisglass, and including national security advisor Giora Eiland, Ambassador Dan Ayalon, military secretary Yoav Gallant, and diplomatic advisor Shalom Turjiman - met with Rice and her aides for some three hours in the White House. A separate meeting was held with Powell.

At the end of the discussions, it was decided to hold a round of additional talks ahead of Sharon's visit to Washington, which is expected to be held at the end of March.

Sharon is asking for a written agreement with the U.S., according to which it will not be demanded of Israel that it hold negotiations on any diplomatic plan, until a change in the Palestinian leadership, and furthermore that Israel be allowed to build in the settlement blocs of Ariel, Gush Etzion and Ma'aleh Adumim, which are intended to be annexed in the future. In exchange, Israel will evacuate the settlements and move the route of the separation fence closer to the Green Line.

In 19 years of military service, I had never heard such a politically laden warning on such an obscure topic to such an inconsequential player ... >>>
